The Program

9:30 - 10:30

Intro & Exercises

We’ll begin by choosing random colours to play with, letting the water guide us as we explore the concepts of flow and mixing—essential building blocks of watercolour.
10:30 - 11:00

Morning Tea

11:00 - 12:30

Painting #1

Becoming more intentional, we’ll use a wash of two colours to gently set the scene, infusing this small study with mood and atmosphere.

Step 2: Rewetting the area will allow us to introduce a band of trees and their mirrored reflections with stronger colour to complete the painting with balance and harmony.

12:30 - 1:00

Lunch & Chat

Take this time to get to know your classmates while also getting answers to your morning session questions.

1:00 - 2:30

Painting #2

We’ll begin with a flowing, varied wash to evoke movement on the sea and gentle ripples.

Step 2: Once the paper has dried, we’ll add distant islands on the horizon, and a simple boat sailing mid-scene, carrying the calm mood of the painting. This part happens while still working on dry paper.

2:30 - 3:00

Recap Q&A

This will be your opportunity for us to consider what we have done during the day, with the opportunity to clarify what is still a mystery to you. There is no such thing as a silly question. All will be answered to the best of my ability.

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
