How It Works
4 Weekly Sessions (3–4 hours each):
Each week focuses on a different aspect of painting flowers in watercolour — building skills gradually through guided exercises and demonstrations before bringing them together in finished floral paintings.
Learn & Apply:
You’ll learn how to observe and simplify floral shapes, understand how petals and leaves sit in space, and work confidently with colour, tone, and edges. Clear explanations and step-by-step demos make each concept easy to follow.
Practical & Simple:
We’ll work with a limited palette, allowing you to focus on colour harmony, layering, and paint-to-water ratios without the overwhelm of too many materials or choices.
From Studies to Finished Paintings:
Each session includes smaller exploratory studies, followed by a more complete floral painting so you can see how techniques translate into resolved artwork.
Supportive & Relaxed:
Small groups ensure plenty of individual guidance, questions answered in real time, and a friendly atmosphere where learning and enjoyment go hand in hand.
About the Paintings we'll create
There are a variety of approaches explored throughout the course. You’ll paint bold, joyful blooms such as sunflowers and poppies, learning how to build layered washes and expressive petal shapes, as well as softer florals like daisies where negative painting and subtle tonal contrasts play an important role.
Native subjects, gum blossoms and foliage, introduce more organic shapes and looser brushwork, helping you understand how flowers relate to stems, leaves, and surrounding space. Across all paintings, the focus is on clear structure, confident colour choices, and techniques that allow flowers to feel lively and fresh — without overworking the paint.

The Classes
Sunflower – Bold Colour & Layered Petals
This
painting demonstrates how to build strong, confident petals using
layered washes and directional brushstrokes. You will learn how
to suggest depth and form without outlining every detail, working
from light to dark and allowing the paper to contribute to
highlights. The background shows how soft, loose washes can support a
focal flower without competing with it.

Daisies – Negative Painting & Tonal Contrast
This lesson focuses on negative painting and the importance of tonal contrast to define light-coloured petals. By painting the background first and allowing shapes to emerge, you will learn how to create fresh, white flowers without relying on heavy detail. It’s an excellent exercise in restraint, edges, and controlling water flow.

Gum Blossoms – Native Florals & Organic Structure
This painting introduces native florals, with an emphasis on simplified shapes, hanging forms, and the relationship between blossoms, stems, and leaves. Explore looser brushwork and layered colour to suggest complexity without overworking. It’s ideal for learning how to balance detail with suggestion in more organic subjects.

Poppies – Expressive Washes & Colour Harmony
This work showcases expressive wet-in-wet washes combined with stronger colour accents. Students learn how to let colour mix naturally on the paper, creating vibrant, flowing petals while maintaining structure through tone and edge control. It’s a great example of how bold colour choices can still feel balanced and harmonious.

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
