Studio Workshop: Doors & Windows

In this relaxed evening art class, we’ll explore the quiet charm and storytelling power of doors and windows—those architectural gems we often discover while travelling or wandering our local streets.

Working in the style of a travel sketchbook, you'll learn how to sketch a doorway or window using expressive pen and wash techniques. We'll begin with water-soluble pens and a water-brush to focus on tonal sketching—creating atmospheric, monochrome images that highlight form and contrast without the complication of colour.

Next, we’ll switch to waterproof pens to build expressive line work, followed by gentle watercolour washes to enhance the form, mood, and character of your scene. These techniques are ideal for anyone looking to gain confidence in watercolour sketching and sketching architecture in a loose, creative way.

As time permits, we’ll also experiment with watercolour pencils to add texture and interest—great for capturing aged surfaces, wooden grains, or stone details.

You're welcome to bring a reference photo or a memory of a favourite doorway or window, or choose from our inspiring collection of images. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to expand your skills, this is a fun and fulfilling way to unwind and explore new techniques in a supportive setting.

All materials are provided—just bring your enthusiasm!

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
