Studio Workshop: Pen & Wash – Capturing Architectural Details

This in-studio workshop is a focused take on my Travel Sketchbook workshop with an emphasis on depicting architectural details in Pen & Wash. Rather than sketching on location, we’ll be working from carefully selected photographic references, allowing us to break down ornate buildings into manageable sections and discover effective ways to simplify and represent these complex forms.

Morning Session: Water-Soluble Pen Sketching

We will begin by using water-soluble pens, which allow for a sketch-first approach, followed by selective water application to create beautiful tonal values. This technique is particularly effective for creating monotone drawings, which not only have a striking appeal, but also work wonderfully in travel sketchbooks. By removing the complexity of colour, we can focus on the elegance and simplicity of the building’s structure.

Afternoon Session: Adding Watercolour for Vibrancy

In the second half of the workshop, we will explore using waterproof pens to establish our drawings before introducing watercolour washes for added depth and colour. Watercolour pencils can also be an excellent alternative for this stage. This technique is ideal for sketching out and about, whether exploring a city abroad or capturing the charm of local architecture.

With both approaches, you will gain confidence in drawing and painting buildings, making it a natural and enjoyable way to include architectural elements in your sketchbook—no matter where in the world you are!

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
