Immerse yourself with the splendour of Australia’s gumtrees as we discover precise textures, colours, and learn the brushwork techniques required to deliver them into existence in watercolour.

This workshop is the perfect start for beginners and intermediate artists seeking to enhance their skills, while also embracing the essence of those fantastic trees.

Painting #1: White Gumtrees
The striking beauty of white gumtrees, with their pristine, bark-shedding trunks, will take centre stage. In this piece, simplicity is key—our purpose is to paint just sufficiently to permit the trees to “sing.” The focus will be on brushwork as we create a minimal yet powerful darker background to highlight the purity and lightness of the tree trunks.

Painting #2: Coloured Tree Trunks
Contrasting with the white gum tree, our second painting explores the subtleties of coloured tree trunks. While painting delicate hues to rich textures, we’ll experiment with granulating paints to capture the tree’s natural beauty. The resulting painting will exhibit the intricate splendour of these textured trunks, highlighting both the colour and substance.

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolor. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
