Studio Workshop: Birds in Action
A favourite pastime for many, including myself, is watching birds—whether in the garden or further afield. Observing them as they hop along the ground or, even better, soar through the sky is always a delight. However, capturing their movement and energy in a painting is quite different from simply taking a photograph. So, let’s give it a go!
This workshop is ideal for both beginners and intermediate artists who want to develop their skills while embracing the joy of painting birds in action. Through guided exercises and practical techniques, we will explore how to depict birds with confidence, focusing on their shapes, colours, and movement.
An expressive style will be explored in these sessions to help us bring these fascinating creatures to life on paper.
Morning session: Movement and Form of Seagulls
We’ll begin with exercises to depict the movement and form of seagulls, both on the beach and in the air. Then, we’ll incorporate these birds into a simple background, using loose washes and animated brushstrokes to bring an imaginary sea & beach scene to life.
Afternoon session: Galahs and Birds in Flight
Focusing on Galahs and other birds in flight, we’ll create one or more smaller individual paintings. Using water to soften edges and create the illusion of movement, we’ll capture the elegance and energy of birds with minimal, yet effective detail.

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
