How It Works

  • 4 Weekly Sessions (4 hours each): Each week explores a different aspect of watercolour foundations — through playful, guided exercises that build skills naturally.
  • Learn & Apply: Deepen your understanding of composition, colour, and paint/water ratios with clear explanations, live demonstrations, and plenty of hands-on practice.
  • Practical & Simple: Work with a limited palette of 7 colours — enough for creative freedom without the overwhelm of too many choices.
  • Bring It Together: Finish each session with a small painting that puts your new techniques into action.
  • Small Group Setting: Enjoy a supportive environment (max. 8 participants) where you’ll get personal feedback, and also share the journey with other art lovers.

The Classes

Week 1

Autumn Leaves –
Wet-in-Wet Colour & Edges

We explore wet-in-wet painting to create soft colour blends and natural transitions. This exercise focuses on letting colours flow into one another, observing how pigment behaves on damp paper, and suggesting form with minimal brushwork.

Week 2

Misty Trees & Reflections – Atmosphere & Soft Shapes

This lesson introduces atmospheric landscapes using gentle washes and soft, vertical shapes. We practise creating distance, reflections, and mood by controlling water, lifting colour, and allowing edges to remain loose and blurred.

Week 3

Tree Trunks – Tonal Values & Suggesting Form

Here we focus on tonal contrast rather than detail. Using simple shapes and limited colour, students learn how light and dark values create the illusion of solid tree trunks, depth, and foliage without overworking the painting.

Week 4

Simple Boat on Water – Washes, Reflections & Focal Point

In this class we combine a calm sky and water wash with a simple focal subject. Students learn how to place a subject, suggest reflections, and use colour contrast to draw the eye — all while keeping the painting light and fresh.

More Details

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
