How It Works
- Clear demonstrations first Each concept is explained and demonstrated step by step — looking at composition, tonal values, colour mixing, and how to suggest distance and depth in a landscape.
- Learn by doing You’ll work through guided exercises that focus on sky, landforms, trees, and atmosphere, helping you understand how watercolour behaves in landscape painting.
- Simple, practical approach We’ll work with a limited palette and uncomplicated techniques, so you can focus on learning rather than juggling too many materials.
- From exercises to a finished study In the later part of the day, you’ll apply what you’ve learned to a small landscape painting, bringing all the elements together in a relaxed, supported way.
- Supportive, small-group learning With plenty of individual guidance and time for questions, you’ll gain confidence and clarity — without pressure or expectation of perfection.
From gentle, misty hills to stronger mountain forms and tree-filled valleys, this workshop will help you understand how landscapes are built — step by step — without overwhelm.
You’ll learn how to simplify complex scenes, use water and pigment confidently, and bring your landscapes to life with expressive brushwork and luminous, transparent colour.

Roslyn Hartwig uses a step-by-step demonstration method in her classroom to guide students through the drawing process until they have completed their work. Courses often include exercises and visual 'play' to enhance learning and creativity. Her workshops promote a relaxed and fun environment that challenges you to practice the technical aspects of watercolour. Roslyn encourages students to embrace the learning curve, emphasizing that perfection is not expected when trying a new technique for the first time.
